What do we do at Toastmasters? a typical meeting has the following elements,
There is usually a short Business session so that members can practise meeting procedure and chairmanship. We have a Table Topics session - a number of short speeches where people are called up at random to speak for only 1 minute without preparation. This can be a very entertaining part of the evening. A Prepared Speech Session.......where 3 or 4 members have been scheduled in advance to prepare and present a speech ( normally 5-7 minutes ) to the meeting. And we have Evaluations - speakers are evaluated at some point after their speech by a person nominated to do so. The evaluator follows guidelines in the speech manual . Evaluation is a regular and important part of Toastmasters as it helps members to recognise and consider various aspects of speaking.
What Do I Get Out Of It?
On joining, each new member receives a kit containing an assignment guide, name badge, plus a handbook containing a series of ten speeches from the Communication and Leadership Program (each focusing on an aspect such as gestures, speech organisation, vocal variety, etc). Members also receive a monthly Toastmasters International magazine full of helpful communication techniques and ideas..
Leadership
Members build leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and motivating others to help them. Club leadership roles and a leadership development program also offer opportunities to learn and practise the role of a leader.
